Wayfellow helps friends plan and run road trips together. This page explains, in plain words, what we keep and what we do with it.

What we store

  • Your account: name, email, and your maps app preference.
  • Trips you create or join: stops, times, stays, votes, polls, and chat messages.
  • Expenses you add, so the crew can split costs.
  • Photos you add to stops.
  • Saved places you add (draft wording, to review): the place name, coordinates, category, your notes and list name, and the original Google Maps or Apple Maps link, which only you can see. Google Takeout files are read on your device; only the places you keep are uploaded. Screenshots are read once to find place names and towns, then discarded. Links from the iPhone share sheet are sent with a link-only key that can add places but can't read anything; signing out or deleting your account turns it off. When you plan from saved places, a trip stop may remember who saved it and its link for the crew; public plans never include either.
  • Basic usage counts (for example "a trip was started") to see what's working. These never include your location or message text.

Live location

Sharing your location is off by default. You turn it on per trip, it is shared only with that trip's crew, and it stops automatically when the sharing time runs out or the trip ends. We delete live positions when a trip finishes. You choose how often your position updates (Frequent, Balanced, Battery saver or Check-ins only); with Check-ins only, no live position is sent.

Guests

Friends can join a trip from an invite link as a guest with only a first name, without an email. A guest's first name, votes, check-ins, photos and (if they turn it on) live location are shared with that trip's crew. Guests can't see shared costs. Guest data is deleted 30 days after last use or 14 days after their trips end, or right away with "Delete my guest data" in Settings.

Help alerts

If you tap "Need help" and confirm, your exact location at that moment and your optional note are sent to everyone in that trip, guests included. We delete help alerts 7 days after they're marked resolved, or after the trip ends. This app isn't an emergency service. In an emergency, call your local emergency number first.

Photos

Check-in photos are resized on your phone and their hidden details (including location and time taken) are removed before upload. Only your trip's crew can see them. They appear in public recaps only if the trip owner picks specific photos; that's off by default. You can remove your own photos, and the trip owner can remove any photo.

Secret spots

A secret spot's exact pin is stored so your crew can find it. Only you, and people on trips you add it to, can see it (you can hide a spot from guests). Spots never appear in public plans, Explore, link previews, follow-along pages, public recaps or Year in review. Calendar feeds show "Secret spot" without a location unless you turn it on, and exports leave spots out unless you tick "Include my secret spots". Spot photos have location and time details removed before upload. Unfinished spots stay on your phone until you save them. Deleting your account deletes your spots, their photos, and your confirmations and reports.

Who else processes your data

  • AI planning: when you plan or change a trip with words, the text you type and the current trip plan are sent to an AI provider to produce the itinerary. Don't put sensitive personal details in trip descriptions.
  • Road routing: stop coordinates (not your name) are sent to openrouteservice to calculate drive times and road routes.
  • Map links: to read a shared map link we follow its redirects and read only the final web address; we never load the page or use Google's place data. Place details come from OpenStreetMap. Exports for Google My Maps are files you choose to import yourself.
  • Weather and maps: stop coordinates are used to load weather from Open-Meteo and map tiles from OpenStreetMap.
  • Hosting: your data is stored with our hosting and database provider.

What we don't do

  • No ads.
  • We don't sell your data or share it with advertisers.

Public recap links

If a trip owner creates a public recap link, anyone with it can see the route, stops, crew first names and photos. Expenses, chat, emails and locations are never included. The owner can turn the link off at any time.

Public plans

Plans are private until the owner chooses "Anyone with the link" or "Listed in Explore". A public plan is a cleaned-up copy made when you publish or tap Update: stop names, town-level areas, notes, drive times, stays and tips. We remove your start and end points, stays at friends' or family homes, and any phone numbers, emails or links, and pickups show only the town. Crew names, chat, costs, votes, check-ins, photos and live locations are never included. Your first name is shown only if you leave "Show my first name" on. If someone copies your plan, they get their own private copy. Unpublish any time from the trip's Share plan sheet; the link stops working right away. Saves, follows, blocks and reports you make are stored with your account.

Deleting your data

Open Settings on the home screen and tap "Delete my account and data". We remove your profile, trip memberships, saved places, photos and live location. Your chat messages stay in shared trips without your name, and expenses you paid stay so the crew's balances still add up, shown as "Former member". Trips you own pass to another crew member, or are deleted if you're the only one. Your public plans, saves, follows and blocks are deleted too.
